Pilot Sea Ecology Research Program for Hvar Students: September 2024

Pharos Institute and Boz Life Science Research and Teaching Institute (www.bozinstitute.org), San Diego, California  are excited to present their pilot summer 2024 marine ecology and human health risk assessment research project:

The pilot research project is part of the Boz Institute “Environmental Impact on Species Diversity: Collaborative International Research, STEM Education, and Global Policy Program.” The Hvar pilot component of the program would bring together Dr. Božinović, President and CEO of Boz Institute and Head of the Environment Department of Pharos Institute and his research team with Hvar-based Professor of Chemistry and Biology , Nikol Petrić, and selected students during early September 2024 to collect marine mussel and seawater samples on up to six sites along the coast of Hvar. During 2-weeks of field and laboratory activities, students will learn about marine biology, environmental sampling and testing, and participate in data collection, storage, and preparation of samples for chemical and metagenomic analysis.

The two-week pilot research project is a basis for designing an innovative STEM based hands-on research education program for students from Hvar. The samples collected during the summer will be used for the larger global project, and the Hvar students and the teacher will continue participating virtually, learning how to manage and analyze data, generate figures, communicate their findings, and assist in preparing the manuscript for the publication.

Stay tuned for updates on the full program and its sponsors as the students and researchers begin their research efforts.
