Conference: Tourism and Islands of Memory June 2 and 3

Tourism has shaped the history of the island of Hvar for over 150 years, including Stari Grad for a century. Mass tourism in particular has transformed the economy and social life of the island, as well as much of the eastern Adriatic coast, since the Second World War.
On 2 and 3 June, the third conference dedicated to the “Islands of Memory” will be held in Stari Grad, following the successful previous editions in 2018 and 2024. This year’s conference focuses on tourism and history, with panels exploring the impact of overtourism, dark tourism, and the interrelationship between heritage and tourism, as well as the memory of tourism. In addition to the four academic panels, a public forum and a workshop with local school students will be held at the Stari Grad Museum.
The conference is organized by the Pharos International Institute for Science, Art and Culture in cooperation with the Center for Southeast European Studies of the University of Graz, the Stari Grad Museum and the University of Rijeka.
